One place Matt rarely chooses for a first meeting? His office.
Sure, it’s formal, but, arguably, stifling. It feels transactional.
As mentioned last week, Matt usually has his introductory meetings over a casual cup of coffee.
But the point of these meetings isn’t to discuss sales or technology.
And they don’t always need to be at a coffee shop.
Connecting Outside the Office
For Matt, the best introductory meetings happen when people get to see one another outside of a traditional business setting.
The point isn’t so much the coffee or the event itself, it’s to show that Matt’s a friendly, approachable person, not someone you can’t see on the other end of a phone call.
“I have met clients at Cougars games. I love sitting with them at a baseball game,” Matt explains. “They get to see that I’m there, and they get to see me genuinely of who I am and why we support that organization and others.”
Community events create another opportunity to connect with people outside of a typical business setting. Matt explains he’s met several clients at the Casa Kane County Gala. He explains that it’s a passion of his.
“They get to see why it’s my passion and why we impact the community there as well. And it becomes a bonding moment of something. If they’re there, it’s also a passion of theirs.”
The Secret Isn’t the Event
The reason Matt rarely starts with a meeting in the office has nothing to do with the office itself. It has everything to do with creating space for a genuine conversation.
Events are excellent conversation starters for Matt to get to know the person behind the business, while they get to know the person behind Teqworks.
Whether it’s over coffee, at a Cougars game, or during a local community event, Matt’s goal is always the same: to get to know the person behind the business before talking technology.
